Summary:
Clausewitz and the State is a biography of one of the significant thinkers of the modern world. Originally published in 1976, followed by an expanded edition in 1985, and translated into several languages, the work gained wide praise for successfully linking Clausewitz's military career and his writings-placing both in their proper historical context. In a new preface to this third edition, Peter Paret amplifies some of his earlier arguments and relates his work to recent interpretations of Clausewitz's work and influence. Beyond its historical interest, Paret's analytic narrative of Clausewitz's efforts to think systematically about the nature of war, how to use and how to control it, has obvious contemporary relevance.
