- Summary:
- Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a handwritten transcription of the text in a hard-covered notebook, annotated as a prompt-book; and 2 handwritten role books, for the parts of Commerzienräthin Zirbel and Guste, Köchin. (The play has 3 other roles: Hauptmann von Dürrfeld; David, Bedienter; and Köck, Soldat und Dürrfelds Bursche.) The role book for Guste bears the name of the actress Bertha Kost, and in the text two other names of cast members are noted on the page with the list of characters--Herr Paulson as Dürrfeld, and Fräulein Prinzhorn as Commerzienräthin Zirbel. At least the names of the two actresses are familiar from the casts of other German-language plays given in Philadelphia and might reflect a performance in the mid 1880s to mid 1890s. In the context of the Learned Collection, it is likely that the items belonged to Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia during that period; the title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34). (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
