Summary:
Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Theater-Commissions-Geschäft von H. Michaelson, 1863; "Den Bühnen gegenüber als Manuscript gedruckt"), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; two versions of a scenario, both handwritten; and 13 handwritten role books, for the following parts: von Eichen, Geheimsekretair; von Born, Legationsrath; Amschel; Rebecca, Amschel's Frau; Simon; Esther; Zadik; Shie; Abraham, alter Jude; ein französischer Lieutnant; Strolch, Metzgeselle; ein Bürger; and Senatsdiener. (The play has 2 additional characters: der Fürst; Capitain der Frankfurter Milizen.) The published copy and the role books are all labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia, first as an actor and later as a prompter, from the early 1870s until at least the mid 1890s, and who also ran a theater lending library. The title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34). Names of actresses and actresses noted on the covers of role books seem to reflect 3 different casts. One set of names likely stem from a performance in Philadelphia around 1875. Two of the remaining names (Oscar Mojean, Laura Mojean) were members of the cast that performed the play at Kump's Hall in Kansas City, MO, in 1883, as documented by an oversized playbill (see folder 722). A number of other names could not be placed. There are also names of cast members (including Mojean) noted in the published copy next to the list of characters. The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills do not contain any references to this play other than the Kansas City playbill mentioned above.
