- Summary:
- Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin, 1867; "Den Bühnen gegenüber als Manuscript gedruckt und dem Theater-Commissions-Geschäft von H. Michaelson in Berlin zum ausschlisslichen Bühnen-Debit übergeben"), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 19 handwritten role books, for the following parts: der Pfarrer; Stumpf, Forstwart; Marie, seine Frau; Leni, Stumpf's Tochter; Friedel, Stumpf's Sohn; Feller, Wachtmeister bei den Grenzjägern; Herber, Grenzjäger; Hansel, Sternwirth; Beate, Sternwirthin; Christi, der Jochbauer; Vincenz, sein sohn; Huber, Bauer; Franzl, der Schmied; Heiger, Bauer; die Heigerin, seine Frau; Hannickel, Raubschütz aus Tirol; Walpurg, Magd bei Christi; erster Gemsjäger; and ein Holzknecht. (One role, zweiter Gemsjäger, seems to have been omitted in performance.) According to the title page of the published copy, the play is based on a true event ("einer wahren Begebenheit"). A playbill clipping (a newspaper advertisement) pasted to the inside front cover of the published copy gives the cast of a performance of the play at Turnerhalle Sommer-Theater, Philadelphia, on 16 Oct. 1873. The names of cast members from that performance are also noted on some of the role books. In the published copy one name is noted on the page listing characters--Frl. Kurth, who does not appear on the 1873 playbill but was also engaged in German-language theater in Philadelphia. All of the items are labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia, first as an actor and later as a prompter, from the early 1870s until the mid 1890s, and who also ran a theater lending library. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
