Summary:
The play by Müller was first published in 1875. The items are handwritten role books (actors' scripts) for the following parts: Hansel, Schmied; August Wetterhahn, Schmiedsgesell; and Obermayer, Schreiber. The items are labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia, first as an actor and later as a prompter, from the early 1870s until the mid 1890s, and who also ran a theater lending library. The title appears in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34), where it is listed as a three-act Volksstück with music, calling for 12 male and 2 female roles. Names of actors noted on the covers of the role books reflect up to 9 different casts over time. Some of the names reflect performances in Philadelphia from 1878 to the early 1890s; a few of the names could not be placed. The role book for Obermayer is stamped in several places "M. Eisemann," by an actor who played the role at one time--probably Moritz Eisemann, who acted in German-language theater in Philadelphia in the early 1890s. See the index in the collection's register for details about 5 theater newspapers (drawer 35) related to performances of the play in Philadelphia in 1878, 1889 and 1893.
