- Summary:
- The play was first published in 1865. The items are a published copy (Berlin: Eduard Bloch, n.d.; Eduard Bloch's Theater-Correspondenz Nr. 5, 15th edition), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and a handwritten role book (actor's script) for the part of Ernst (Baron Ernst von Wallbach). (The play has 2 other roles: Elise and ein Kellner.) The published copy dates from around 1873. In the context of the Learned Collection it appears likely that the items belonged to the theater lending library of Theodor Bloch, in Philadelphia. The title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886. Noted on the front of the role book is the name of an actor who played the part, L'Allemand, most likely Conrad L'Allemand, who was engaged in German-language theater in Philadelphia in the early 1890s. On the front cover of the published copy is a note that seems to indicate that the role of Elise is to be played by Frl. (Fräulein) Streissguth, apparently referring to the actress who played that role in a performance of the play at Harmonie Hall, Philadelphia, in Dec. 1897, as documented in the theater's program (see folder 699).
