Summary:
According to Karl Goedeke's Grundriss zur Geschichte der deutschen Dichtung aus den Quellen, the German play was first published in 1823, and is an adaptation of the French play L'Impromptu de Versailles, by Molière. The file contains 10 handwritten role books (actors' scripts); 9 of the role books are for the following parts: Kummer; Mamsell Müller; Louis; Madame Stark; Heiter; Mamsell Rose; Otto; der Poet; and Saalbaader. The tenth role book is not clearly designated but seems to provide collectively for the roles of Philipp; Zimmerleute (1. and 2.); and der Haushofmeister and Gefolge. The extant role books appear to represent a complete set, and are accompanied by a paper sleeve that originally held them together, labeled with the title of the play ("Sämtliche Rollen aus Die Theaterprobe"). The sleeve is secured with a red wax seal that bears a relatively clear impression of a design that includes the torso of an animal or mythical creature (possibly a unicorn) and what might be a lyre. The author's name does not appear on any of the items. In the context of the Learned Collection, it seems plausible to assume that the items belonged to Theodor Bloch's theater lending library in Philadelphia; the title by Oswald appears in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34), where it is listed as calling for 8 male and 3 female roles--a distribution of roles that correlates relatively well with the extant role books. On some of the role books the names of the individuals assigned the roles are noted (among them: "Graf Thun" and "Frau Gräfin Thun"). The items themselves might well date from before 1850. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
