Summary:
Planning and Support for People with Intellectual Disabilities provides comprehensive information for any professional working with people with intellectual disabilities, particularly case managers. In illuminating the complexities, the tensions and dilemmas practitioners must negotiate in their everyday practice, the book considers the three key dimensions that mediate outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities: the context of the broader social welfare system; program structure; and practice - the processes used by practitioners including the skills and knowledge they draw on.
The book outlines the expertise required and common issues in case management practice for working with people at different stages of their life. Emphasising the importance of taking a rights-based approach to supporting people, the contributors show how effective case management needs to be individualised, carried out in partnership with the individual and their family, and needs to take a whole-of-life approach to needs and aspirations.
Areas covered include inter-agency and cross-sector collaboration, balancing risk, rights and protection, listening and communication, approaches to behaviour support and ethical decision-making. The text is complemented by first-hand accounts of the case management experience from service-users, parents and case managers. An essential reference for practitioners, this book is also an invaluable guide for policy makers, researchers, students, nurses, carers, and people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
