- Summary:
- The essays in this collection raise the profile and highlight the power of Hegel's aesthetic theory. Addressing a range of important topics, they examine the conceptual basis of Hegel's organization of his aesthetics as well as his treatment of various arts (architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and tragedy). They cover several of the most famous issues in Hegel's writing-including the "end of art" thesis, the association between art and religion, and the vexed relationship between Hegel and the Romantics. The contributors, who write from various perspectives not necessarily aligned with Hegel's position, demonstrate that his lectures on aesthetics constitute a rich reservoir of ideas about the arts, their history and their future. Together, the essays shed light on the profound reflections on art contained in Hegel's philosophy and suggest ways in which his theories might resonate well beyond the field of philosophical aesthetics.
