Summary:
The German play is an adaptation of a Danish source that could not be identified. The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (n.p., n.d.) that has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 4 handwritten role books for the following parts (the complete character list): Registrator Brandt; Anna, seine Nichte; Stein; Unbehagen, Schullehrer und Küster. The published copy has been rebound into a homemade cardboard cover, the inside back showing a post office schedule on which the year "1878" appears. The item is labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from at least 1873, and who ran a theater lending library from around 1880 to the mid 1890s. (The title appears in the catalog of Bloch's library, dated 1886; see box 34.) On the first inside page the book bears the stamp "Theo. M. Schaumberg," and the same stamp is found on the role book for Stein. (The role book for Unbehagen appears also to be from Schaumberg, although it lacks a stamp.) Those items may date from a somewhat earlier period (Schaumberg was in Philadelphia as early as 1868). The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.
