Summary:
Materials related to rehearsal and performance of the play, including a published copy (n.p., n.d.), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 7 handwritten role books. The published copy dates from around 1862, the year play was first published (the title page bears the note "Den Bühnen gegenüber als Manuscript gedruckt"). Music is attributed to Adolf Müller, who is termed "Kapellmeister," indicating that the book was published in Vienna, where Müller was active at that time. Handwritten musical scores for violin and cornet are included (see folder 673). The book was rebound, and bears a homemade label marking it as the property of Theodor Bloch, who acted in German-language plays in Philadelphia from at least 1873, and later ran a theater lending library. The extant role books, which apparently represent only about a third of the characters included in the performance, are for the following parts: Korntheuer, Schauspieler; Demoiselle Huber, Schauspielerin; Doberauer, Theaterfeldwebel; Gabriele, Tochter eines Garteninspektors; Adalbert and Christin (Kinder von Madame Herbst); and Peter Wolf, Wucherer. (The published book shows a list of 38 characters; among the many roles not reprented here is the lead, Therese Krones.) Names on several of the role books reflect the cast that performed at Turner Hall, in Philadelphia, in December 1876, as documented by a playbill in folder 688. The role books for Demoiselle Huber and Peter Wolf are stamped "M. Dardenne," indicating that they belonged to, or were written out by the actress Marie Dardenne, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia in the 1870s and 1880s; those items appear to be somewhat older and bear names that seem to stem from performances before 1876. See also a theater newspaper advertising a performance in Philadelphia in Oct. 1890 (folder 697); the names of those cast members do not, however, appear on any of the role books.
