- Summary:
- The play was first published in 1874. The file contains handwritten materials related to rehearsal and performance, including 1 item (letter) that served as a prop, and 17 role books, for the following parts: Nazl, Schusterjunge; Rosa, Schustersfrau; Kathi, Schofingers Tochter; Franzl, Altgesell; Gesellen; Graf Carl von Wildenschwert; Kammerdiener des Grafen und des Kaisers; Kaiser Josef II; Jean, Diener des Grafen; Freiherr von Sonnenfels, Theater Direktor; Franke, Vorstand der Schneiderinnung; Graf Carl Notengo; Pfarrer von Gamming; Franziska Bernthal, Kleinhäuslerin; Krautkopf, Vorsteher der Schlosserinnung; Meister Kahler, Vorsteher der Tischlerinnung; and Adjutant des Kaisers. (There is at least one role missing: der Schuster, whose name is evidently Schofinger, since Kathi appears to be the Schusterstochter of the title.) The role books are of a uniform appearance and likely belonged to the theater lending library of Theodor Bloch, in Philadelphia; the title is listed in the catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34). Names of actors and actresses written on role books are recognizable from the casts of other German-language plays performed in Philadelphia, and appear to reflect two different casts, the first dating from the late 1870s and the second from the early to mid 1880s. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
