Summary:
Handwritten materials related to rehearsal and performance of the play, including a transcription of the text; a scenario; and 5 role books, for the following parts (the complete cast): Carl Willberg; Julie, seine Frau; Rosen, sein Freund; Benjamin, Gärtner; and Betty, Stubenmädchen. The copy of the text is most likely in the hand of Theodor Schaumberg; it bears his stamp, "Theo. M. Schaumberg" in two places. It was subsequently labeled by hand on the front cover as the property of Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia from around 1880 to the mid 1890s. (Materials related to Schaumberg seem to stem from a somewhat earlier period.) The role books for Willberg and Benjamin are also labeled as the property of Bloch, while the role book for Rosen bears the stamp of Schaumberg. Names of actors and actresses written on the covers of the role books correspond exactly to the cast advertised for a performance of the play on 4 May 1889, at the Aurora Dramatic Circle, Café Logeling, New York City (see playbill, folder 675). It is evident in at least two instances that other names had been erased and written over, indicating that the role books had been used by a different cast previously. (Abbreviated notations next to the character list in the transcription of the text indicate both the Aurora Circle cast and, in a separate list, a different cast.) On the back cover of the role book for Benjamin a series of dates have been noted, two in 1882 and one in 1880. A note crossed out on the front cover of the role book for Willberg gives the day and time of a first rehearsal at an address in Philadelphia (Callowhill Street). The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play aside from the one playbill mentioned above.
