- Summary:
- Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Frankfurt am Main: J. D. Sauerländer's Verlag, 1867; second edition), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; 2 handwritten items (letters) that served as props; and 7 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Leopold, Fürst zu Anhalt-Dessau; Fürstin Henriette; Gottlieb Föhse, Apotheker; Anna-Lise, seine Tochter; Marquis de Chalisac; von Salberg, Hofmarschall; and Georg, Apothekergehülfe. (The play has one additional role: ein Kammerdiener des Fürsten.) The published copy is labeled as the property of Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia from around 1880 to the mid 1890s. Names of actors and actresses written on the covers of role books reflect at least four different sets of cast members who performed the play at different times, including performances in Philadelphia from the 1870s through the 1880s. Two sets of names next to the character list in the published copy reflect performances of 1885 and 1886. See the index in the collection's register for details about related 3 theater newspapers in folders 690 and 704. A fourth newspaper, in folder 698, advertises a performance of the play in 1893 (names of the latter cast do not appear on any of the role books).
