Summary:
Materials related to rehearsal and performance of the play, including a published copy (showing no publishing information), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 11 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Wilhelm Fürst; Michael Scheinmann, Rath; Mathilde, seine Tochter; Kuh von Kuhdorf, Rentier; Emma, seine Tochter; Baron Lieven, Oberdirektor; Friedrich von Herberg; ein fürstlicher Komissär; Theodor, Gastwirth; Rosa, seine Tochter; and Benjamin, Oberkellner. All items have been labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia. A fragment of a playbill pasted on the inside front cover of the published copy advertises a performance of the play on 17 July 1874 at the Deutsches Theater in der Turner-Halle, Philadelphia, under the title "Kuh von Kuhdorf, oder: 2 Tage aus dem Leben eines Fürsten." The latter title is also written on the handmade label pasted on the outside front cover of the book; and a similar title (except beginning "Rentier Kuh von Kuhdorf") has been written on one of the first blank pages. The playbill fragment gives a cast listing, and handwritten annotations to the side indicate a different cast, with the new names corresponding to the names of actors and actresses written on the role books. The role book for Baron Lieven has been dated on the front cover "1875." (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play, aside from the playbill fragment mentioned above.)
