Summary:
The German play is freely adapted from the French play Le Chapeau d'un horloger by Madame Emile de Girardin (also known as Delphine Gay). The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Eduard Bloch, n.d.), with minor annotations (possibly used as a prompt-book), and 7 handwritten role books. The role books are for the following parts: Gonzales; Stephanie, seine Gattin; Rodriguez Gonzales, sein Vetter; Amadeus, Henriette and ein Portier (drei Diener von Gonzales); and ein Uhrmacher. The published book has been rebound in a handmade cardboard cover, but it appears to correspond to the edition of the play published as no. 170 of Eduard Bloch's Dilettanten-Bühne in 1868. The role books, as well as the published copy, are marked as the property of Theodor Bloch, who operated a theater lending-library in Philadelphia from around 1880 to 1895; they also bear stamps of Theodor Schaumberg, from a somewhat earlier period. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills do not include any mention of this play.)
