- Summary:
- Portrait of a Community is the first book-length monograph in English devoted to the history and culture of a single community during the dramatic transition from the later Tang through the Song dynasties. The text focuses on the Mulan River valley on the central Fujian coast from multiple perspectives: the composition and structure of the local elite, marriage connections, the religious and academic cultures of the valley, and finally innovations in kinship practice and means of self-identification. From its strictly local orientation, Portrait of a Community offers a new window into middle period society and culture from which to reengage, and perhaps to challenge, current interpretations.
