- Originally published in 1810, "The Forest Minstrel" is the complete collection of songs by Hogg, featuring his first compositions as a shepherd in Ettrick and those inspired by early contact with the literary culture of Edinburgh. This edition supplies musical settings based on extensive research in pre-1810 Scottish music books (plus CD recording of seventy-two tunes), and an introduction describing Hogg's development as a songwriter.

- Includes bibliographical references (pages [377]-394) and glossary.
- The compact disc includes 72 songs in the four categories of pathetic songs, love songs, humorous songs, and national songs. The recordings are "mechanical renditions generated by the software used to create the notations" in the book, and recorded with a simple piano sound. The contents of the disc are given on p. 403-404.
