- At this time, Benjamin Rush was the Treasurer of the U. S. Mint and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. John Barker was the sheriff of Philadelphia city and county.

- This is a letter from Benjamin Rush to an unknown recipient that introduces John Barker's son; the young Barker wishes to join a possible expedition of the recipient. Includes an engraving of Rush by R. W. Dodson "from a painting by T. Sully."
