- Summary:
- William Cresswell kept a meticulous diary for two years highlighting his work in the extensive gardens at Audley End and his earlier employment in Streatham. His careful record not only gives us a unique insight into the daily tasks and concerns of a journeyman gardener at a great country house, but the diary also provides a glimpse into contemporary events and Cresswell's every day life, from the wooing of his girlfriend to his regular participation in church and village life. The kitchen gardens at Audley End have now been restored in line with Cresswell's description of them in 1874. Combined with a history of the gardens at Audley End, this book will make an ideal gift for anyone interested in gardening and social history.
