Summary:
In a sprawling and epic novel, Eggers illuminates the history of the civil war in Sudan through the eyes of a young boy, Valentino Achak Deng. Separated from his family, Valentino becomes a refugee in war-ravaged southern Sudan, and his travels, truly Biblical in scope, bring him in contact with enemy soldiers, with liberation rebels, with hyenas and lions, with disease and starvation, and with deadly murahaleen (militias on horseback) -- the same sort who currently terrorize Darfur. Ultimately, Valentino finds safety in Kenya and, just after the millennium, is finally resettled in the United States. In 2003, Eggers and Valentino Achak Deng traveled by cargo plane to southern Sudan, where they managed to find his parents who he had not seen in 17 years. An account of this trip was published in the "Believer." Based closely on actual experiences, "What is the What" is heartrending and astonishing, filled with adventure, suspense, tragedy and, finally, triumph.
