- Summary:
- This retrospective of the career of Jean-Honore Fragonard includes the works displayed at the Louvre and illustrates the different techniques and varied themes of one of the most popular 18th-century French artists. Black and red chalk drawings, pen drawings, and washes highlight his craft in different graphic media. His famous interpretations of the work of artists such as Rubens and Jordaens are also included. The thematic diversity of his work reflecting his scrupulous observation of nature, human figures, and landscapes are contrasted with his religious compositions and illustrations of such historical figures as Cervantes and Ariosto.
