- Summary:
- In the Spring of 2005, scholars gathered at the University of Notre Dame from all over the Americas to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 1980 assassination of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero and to reflect on the meaning of his life and death for the Church. The seven superb essays collected in this volume by Rev. Robert Pelton, C.S.C., represent a summary of the very best of those theological and ecclesiological reflections.
- Romero's formal title of archbishop gave him ecclesiastical authority, but his actions won for him ethical and moral authority and confirmed him as an authentically Gospel-based pastor. He exemplified the characteristics of the Old Testament prophets, and of Jesus Himself, calling for change and conversion, speaking out against injustice and oppression.
- In the end, he was murdered by the Salvadoran authorities against whom he took his stand: martyred for being a prophet; for being a bishop who truly cared for his people. His was a "voice for the voiceless" poor of El Salvador. Although his voice has been silenced, the contributors to this volume skillfully and clearly elucidate the powerful witness and hopeful message of his life. This book is perfect for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of that message, for their lives and for the life of the Church.
