This Volume Stands in the tradition of the Austrian founder of Old Iranian study on the Scythians, Wilhelm Tomaschek (1841-1901). It deals, on the one hand, with the continuance of a Scythian topos in the Middle Ages (up to Franz Grillparzer); on the other hand, it pleads for a separation of Scythian in a narrower definition (especially Herodotus') from younger languages like Sarmatian. The book offers a critical examination of the writings on Scythian; the result of this examination is a small etymologicon of the Scythian language. German text.
