- Summary:
- As an alternative within the compulsory education system in Singapore, the madrasa system strives to produce both Muslim professionals and religious teachers and scholars, and is not doing well, argue Rahman (Malay studies, National U. of Singapore) and social scientist Eng (Institute for Policy Studies). They say that the schools are enrolling many more students than they have the capacity to teach, and though caps on their enrollment have been enacted, more reforms are necessary, and the system's philosophy and aims of education within contemporary society must be reevaluated.
