Summary:
Optical Coherence Tomography, the most comprehensive work on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), is organized into three interrelated sections. Section one provides non-physical scientists with an understanding of the basic physics and mathematics utilized in OCT studies. The second section discusses the physics and engineering of OCT technology including the theoretical derivation of axial and lateral resolution generated with OCT, a comprehensive analysis of sources of dynamic range including loss from classical to quantum noise, CCD, A-D conversion, and detailed comparisons of spectral and TD techniques. In addition, topics discussed in detail include photon entanglement, phase analysis, and dispersion analysis for tissue characterization. Section three details the application of OCT to clinical pathologies and techniques with a review of epidemiology, pathophysiology, competing technologies, and factors affecting decisions on clinical utility and therapies. Details of application range from techniques used to characterize tissue, such as special staining and high pressure liquid chromatography, to factors affecting the validity of clinical trails, including sources of bias and trial types. Techniques for effective hypothesis testing in both basic and clinical studies are discussed in detail.
