Summary:
This guide helps third-year medical students move from the classroom to the clinical/hospital setting - a particularly stressful transition in a student-physician's career. In short, readable passages, the Guide advises students on everything from how to read an EKG or chest x-ray (and look competent doing so), to dealing with ornery residents, to wards fashion do's and don'ts. Using humorous stories drawn from his own experiences as a student, resident, and attending, the author designed the Guide as a "kit" to help students "hit the ground running" in tackling their daunting new responsibilities as fledgling doctors.
Dr. Richard Loftus wrote the first version of The Nerd's Guide after his third year at UCSF School of Medicine. As the author says, "This covers everything I wish someone had warned me about before I stumbled onto the wards - not just about the practical points of how to do my job, but also how to keep cool and come off well to my evaluators."
