Summary:
Politics and Ethnicity explores the range of ethno-political conflict, the manner in which it emerges and influences political processes, and its susceptibility to management in the contemporary world. This book focuses on those salient forms of conflict in which the ethnic factor is reinforced by or reinforces other bases of social and political segmentation, such as class and territoriality. Acknowledging the degree to which context affects the different manifestations of ethno-class and ethno-territorial issues, Politics and Ethnicity examines such topics as the historical parallels between anti-Semitic and anti-Romany discrimination in Europe; the different faces of separatism in the advanced democratic, democratizing post-communist, and developing worlds; the role of anti-immigrant parties in the still evolving conflict between Europe's Muslim communities and indigenous peoples; the changing face of ethnic conflict in our time; and the contemporary drift towards extraconstitutional means of managing it.
