Summary:
I have often wondered why children should fall in love with a place that is 11 bumpy miles from nowhere, that has no showers in the bunks, no TV, a telephone that rarely works, a canteen that sells only bobby pins ... (no soda pop or ice cream), a temperamental generator, and an impossible director.
First, I think that the physical setting of the camp, its location and site play a key role in the creation of this mood. Even the most indifferent child cannot help but react to the natural beauty of the Raquette Lake area. Its magnificent sunsets, its beautiful blue waters, its impressive star-studded nights and its wild isolation-all produce a feeling of removal from the pressures and problems of living. It produces a feeling of almost idyllic retreat. I think that adults fail to realize how many pressures we put on children and that childhood is not all roses and honey. I think a retreat from these pressures in an atmosphere that seems millions of miles away from TV, telephones, streamlined highways and hot showers produces a feeling of peace and contentment. And I think that one gets attached to a place that can produce this feeling.
