- Summary:
- Fueled by digital technology, edgy creativity, and fast money, new media burst onto the scene as the hot industry that would take New York into a "new" economy in the 1990s. Awash in new media jobs and images, the city itself seemed to morph as a horde of start-ups gentrified old neighborhoods. Venture capitalists and other promoters trumpeted the rise of a new kind of firm, while "technobohemians" and business types alike reinvented themselves as players in the "deal flow." But buzz proved to be a two-edged sword as waves of investment reduced the urge to create profits. The ensuing crash incinerated the new media's paper wealth, laying bare its dependence on New York's old engines: Wall Street, real estate, and the mass media. As new media dreams were dashed, these powers began picking up the pieces -- until the Trade Center attack put an end to the era, forcing us to imagine again the twenty-first century city. Chronicling the go-go years of the new media district from beginning to end, Silicon Alley is a brilliant account of a memorable era and a cautionary tale about the danger in mixing buzz with the (not-so) smart money.
