- Summary:
- Integrative Health Promotion combines traditional health promotion study with alternative and complementary approaches to healing. Emphasizing health belief systems and models, this book explores the theory and evidence behind a variety of noninvasive therapeutic interventions. Early chapters lay out a conceptual map for the book, clarifying the critical differences between the "disease perspective" dominant in the biomedical, epidemiological, and public health literatures, and the "person perspective" that appears in nursing and alternative/complementary medical literatures. The text then goes on to present theory and practical strategies from both perspectives, moving toward the goal of integrative practice. Integrative Health Promotion discusses mindfulness, respect, active listening, and empathy, as well as creative approaches to both community and global health. The text also emphasizes health belief systems, and cultural, legal, and ethical influences on health promotion.
