Summary:
This report for the fortieth through the forty-ninth sessions of the commission established by the Economic and Social Council covers the years 1996 through 2005. The commission, which in 1987 was charged with advocacy for equality, development and peace, has found generally low participation of women in the decision-making process, a lack of human and financial resources, and the persistence of gender stereotypes that affect the design and implementation of policies and programs in each of 12 critical areas. Of particular concern is a program of work developed in support of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (General Assembly resolution S-23/3). Each of the annual reports has a theme relating to women, such as poverty, the media, the environment, power, the economy, education, violence, armed conflict, human rights, the girl child, health, HIV/AIDS, intolerance, natural disasters, the role of men and boys and conflict resolution.
