Summary:
Volodya Shaparov, a young officer, returns to Moscow after the end of World War II to work with the Moscow Criminal Police. There he meets Gleb Zheglov, chief of a squad which fights organized crime. Their task is to track down a gang ("Black Cat") which terrorizes the city. They also are trying to discover who murdered Larisa Grudzeva. Zheglov believes Larisa's husband, Ivan Grudzev, is the guilty one, but Sharapov has his doubts.
