Summary:
The 1965 passage of immigration reform, which removed racial quotas, generated a mass immigration to the United States from Latin America and Asia. This wave of immigration began in the immediate aftermath of the civil rights era and it led to the formation of a new set of ethnic advocacy groups in American politics. In contrast to other studies of ethnic politics and political incorporation of immigrants in the United States, Immigration Lobbyists shows that despite their constituents' lack of political clout in the voting booth, these advocacy groups were remarkably effective in influencing the formation of federal immigration law and policy. Their success is attributable to two factors: first, despite their particularist ethnic bases, these advocates cast their appeals in terms of universal civil and human rights; second, they demonstrated great skill in forming coalitions with economic interest groups from both business and labor.
