- Summary:
- Set in the 1930's, Narsingh is a Rajput cab driver down on his luck. He is offered a better job in Bihar, Bengal by a businessman. There he meets an old friend and is attracted to his sister Neeli, a Catholic schoolmistress. All seems well by day, but his boss has him delivering packages at night that contain opium. During these shady dealings, he meets Gulabi, who had been forced into prostitution. Narsingh finds himself in two dilemnas--which woman does he really love and does he want to go straight and be poor or be rich, but corrupt.
