- Summary:
- Jebb's Selections from the Attic Orators offers both extracts and full speeches from one of the major geners of classical literature. The three basic types of speech, as defined by Aristotle's classification into forensic (legal), deliberative (political), and epideictic (display, such as Olympic orations), are all represented by samples from the first five of the ancient canon of Attic orators: Antiphon, Andocides, Lysias, Isocrates and Isaeus. Later Greek and Roman rhetoricians regarded the fifth and fourth centuries BCE as the golden age of Greek prose writing; these orators were its finest exponents.
- Jebb's edition formed a companion to his magisterial survey of the same five authors, The Attic Orators from Antiphon to Isaeus. His primary concern was to trace the development of Attic prose between Thucydides and Demosthenes by providing detailed commentaries on the grammatical, legal, rhetorical and historical problems raised by the speeches. The success of this edition is reflected by its reprinting for almost a hundred years, through periods when the study of Greek orators was far less popular than in the late nineteenth century. This new edition is testimony to its enduring value.
