- Biography/History:
- Amanda ("Andy") Zsolnay was the mother of Paul Zsolnay (1895-1961), who founded Paul Zsolnay Verlag in Vienna in 1923-1924. Paul Zsolnay was Werfel's publisher from 1923 to 1938; he was married to Alma's daughter Anna from 1929 to 1935. Andy Zsolnay was at least socially acquainted with Alma Mahler since before the founding of the publishing company; Paul Zsolnay was also friends with Alma's mother and stepfather, Anna and Carl Moll, and her half-sister Maria Eberstaller. Later Andy was friends with both Alma and Franz Werfel. After 1938, Andy Zsolnay was living in England with her son Paul and her granddaughter Alma Zsolnay.
- Summary:
- Andy Zsolnay's letters reflect friendship with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel. Andy also expresses interest in Franz's work; 1 item is a condolence letter upon the death of Franz. In the period 1941 to 1946 her letters frequently convey news about Alma Zsolnay (the granddaughter of both Alma Mahler and Andy Zsolnay), as well as Paul Zsolnay, and Anna Mahler, who was also living in England at that time.
- Notes:
- Includes 1 letter from Paul Zsolnay to Alma Mahler (on the reverse of a letter from Andy Zsolnay).
