Summary:
The second edition of Palliative Medicine - a case-based manual combines the personal experience of physicians with the collective wisdom of colleagues, integrating their clinical acumen and research findings in chapters considering the major problems in palliative care. The book uses a series of cases to illustrate critical points in palliative medicine. The case studies have been carefully chosen to reflect real life clinical practice. The contributors illustrate, through the case studies, the desired skills, attitudes, and knowledge required in this field of medicine.
Reflecting the broad mandate of palliative care, the new edition introduces a number of new topics and authors, plus a thorough update of other chapters. It includes material on non-malignant disease which is an integral part of palliative care. The text distinguishes between evidence-based practice and common practice which has yet to be verified by research studies. Most chapters include a brief section at the end containing a commentary on future trends and promising areas of research.
Palliative Medicine - a case-based manual is a provocative book that will help to stimulate enthusiastic discourse. Although aimed at students, trainees, and physicians who bear responsibility for the relief of suffering, it will also appeal to palliative care professionals, and assist them with their teaching.
