Summary:
The sole inhabitants of a small island off the coast of Japan are a farmer, his wife, and their two small sons. The simple but arduous routine of their daily lives is a constant struffle for survival, of never-ending trips to the mainland for precious buckets of water which must be lugged up the rocky, steep slope of the island and then doled out in cupfuls to the meager crops.
