- Summary:
- Set in 19th century Bengal. Uma, a mute, is an orphan who lives with her uncle. While she has a good chance of finding a husband, her horoscope indicates that he would die soon after marrying her. So, she is married off to a Banyan tree. Uma is raped and becomes pregnant by the village school teacher and is treated as an outcast by the women in the house. During a fierce storm, Uma takes refuge under her husband tree -- the next morning both she and part of the tree are dead.
