Summary:
This monograph examines the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic in Asia, its economic effects, and its effects on global society. Lee (public and social administration, City U. of Hong Kong) and Warner (business, U. of Cambridge) first recount the history of world's most notable epidemics and pandemics, then examine how SARS took root and spread from southern China to most of Asia and beyond. They also explore its impact on economies, labor markets, and human resources in Asia. The authors also offer case studies conducted in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and Taiwan. From their research, they conclude that both populations and health-care systems need to be prepared, on national and international levels, for the possibility of a recurrence. And, they continue, a global system that can identify and contain public health emergencies is essential to avoid disruption of trade, travel, and society in general.
