Summary:
Violet, a middle-aged Anglo-Indian schoolteacher living alone in Calcutta befriends a former student and her boyfriend and has happy times with them. Then, after her brother, who lives in a nursing home, dies and the student and her friend are married, Violet has no one left and must leave India to go live with faraway relatives.
