- Summary:
- This volume has several objectives. The first is to present an overview of the composition of surface and ground waters on the continents and the mechanisms that control the compositions. The second is to present summaries of the tools and methodologies used in modern studies of the geochemistry of surface and ground waters. The third is to present information on the role of weathering and soil formation in geochemical cycles: weathering affects the chemistry of the atmosphere through uptake of carbon dioxide and oxygen, and paleosols (preserved soils in the rock record) provide information on the composition of the atmosphere in the geological past.
- James (Tim) Drever is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Wyoming. His main research interest is the chemistry of ground and surface waters, with a particular emphasis on weathering processes and contaminant migration. He has a strong interest in the interaction between biotic and abiotic processes in controlling the composition of natural waters. He is the author of the widely adopted textbook The Geochemistry of Natural Waters: Surface and Groundwater Environments (Prentice Hall, 3rd Edition, 1997) and served as Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Geology from 1995 to 2001. He was President of the Geochemical Society for 2004-2005.
