Summary:
The Economy of Early America brings to light a range of new scholarship fostered by the Program in Early American Economy and Society (PEAES). Sponsored by the Library Company of Philadelphia and directed by Cathy Matson of the University of Delaware, PEAES is the only center in the country that is dedicated to promoting scholarly research and publication about the early American economy that stems from work in broadly conceived fields such as commercial and manufacturing history, business, technology, labor, political economy, households, and the economy of the family, down to the 1850s. PEAES activities include a fellowship program, public seminars and education programs, a monograph series, special forums in key scholarly journals, awards for best journal articles, a survey of resources on the economy of the Philadelphia region, and acquisition of printed materials to augment the rich collections of the Library Company.
