- Summary:
- After decades of being banished from residential areas, water is now becoming an increasingly significant feature in urban design. Whether it is the integration of natural watercourses into the built environment, the incorporation of water elements in urban areas for climatic purposes or the creation of oases of tranquillity or drama such as pools or fountains - these matters are not just of interest to architects and town planners, but also attract a lot of attention from the public. Intelligent rainwater management concepts are often part of avant-garde architecture these days, and the daylighting and rehabilitation of rivers has become a topic for a general audience, not least because of the flood desasters of recent years. In this publication, distinguished experts discuss a whole range of aspects of working with water. Many international projects exemplify the wide variety of creative use of water in the city, in art, the landscape and architecture. Amongst the works documented are a large new city park in Portland, Oregon, a new concept for Queens Botanical Garden in New York, the conversion of a former airport in Oslo or the park for a new residential area in Oulu, Finland.
