- Biography/History:
- Morgenstern made Alma Mahler's acquaintance in Vienna in the 1920s through their mutual friends Helene and Alban Berg. Like Alma, he fled Austria in 1938, and they encountered each other in Marseilles in 1940. Morgenstern emigrated to the U.S. in 1941, and lived in New York City. They apparently developed a closer friendship in Alma's later years, when she was also living in New York.
- Summary:
- The correspondence dates from 1947 and 1957; included is a photocopy of the typescript of the memorial speech about Alma that Morgenstern gave at the funeral in New York City in 1964.
- Notes:
- According to the biographer Oliver Hilmes, the original typescript of Morgenstern's funeral oration is held at Deutsche Bibliothek Frankfurt am Main, Deutsches Exilarchiv 1933-1945.
