Biography/History:
Maass had emigrated to the U.S. in 1939; at the time of the correspondence he was teaching German literature at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass. He included works by Werfel in a course he taught on modern German literature. After Werfel's death he apparently had a friendly relationship with Alma Mahler and visited her at some point in New York.

Includes Maass's response to Werfel's play, Jacobowsky und der Oberst, and his expression of gratitude to Alma Mahler, who had apparently responded positively to a work-in-progress by Maass.
