- Summary:
- Arguing that the World Trade Organization has gravitated towards becoming a "World Trade and Sustainable Development Organization," Sampson (economic governance, Institute of Advanced Studies, United Nations U., Japan) seeks to identify the policy considerations that lie at the intersection of WTO trade rules and the pursuit of sustainable development and to provide policy recommendations for improving the role of the WTO in matters relating to sustainable development. He reviews intergovernmental institutional efforts to address environmental management, investigates the substantive link between trade liberalization and sustainable development, and examines GATT-1994 and other WTO provisions that have relevance for sustainable development. He also offers chapters discussing topics such as the implications of growing consumer demand for improved product and service standards; the relationship between the WTO and multilateral environmental agreements; the regulation of genetically modified organisms; and the question of whether the WTO is a useful model for a proposed World Environmental Organization.
