Biography/History:

Since 1940 Kienberger was the head of musical programming at Radio Studio Bern, a radio station in Bern which operated as part of the larger Swiss broadcasting station Beromünster.

Summary:

Kienberger introduces himself as a scholar and musician, and a long-time admirer of Gustav Mahler's work. He relates that in 1940 he was called upon to be director of musical programming at Radio Studio Bern; and that he dedicated himself to reviving and stimulating interest in Mahler's music by organizing performances to be broadcast by the radio station, which, via Beromünster, was heard not only in Switzerland but also in all of Germany. He mentions the Polish-born Swiss conductor Paul Kletzki as a significant collaborator. In his elegant and sometimes poetic letter Kienberger also expresses deep admiration for Alma Mahler. In a handwritten draft Alma responds appreciatively.
