Summary:
What factors influence students' decisions to engage with language learning in the classroom? In what ways do learners and teachers participate in language classroom activity? How do the ever-present factors of time and space contribute to language education practice in the classroom?
These questions are the driving force behind this book, which aims to encourage debate and research about language education, led by issues which emerge from classroom life - the heart of language education practice. Areas such as the affective dimension of classroom life, the role of language in the classroom, the organisation of space and the use of time are explored from a variety of viewpoints. The book draws on a rich array of sources and research data in setting out its case for a reappraisal of what we understand by classroom management, explored here as a multifaceted set of practices in complex contexts of learning and teaching.
Part 1 outlines a view of classroom management based on contemporary understandings of learning, social contexts and language pedagogy. Part 2 examines research and practice in classroom management. Part 3 suggests ways in which readers might further their own research of classroom management, while Part 4 lists resources to assist the student researcher and the practitioner.
